Succulent species Euphorbia ingens cv 'CHOCOLATE DROP' A cactus like tree similar in growth form to the species Euphorbia ingens, but this is a cultivar known as ‘Chocolate Drop’, so named for the large oval chocolate brown spine shields along the margins of the 4-angled stems. Spine shields are pinkish-rose when new, turning to chocolate brown with age. it eventually will grow into a large multi-branched tree with small bright yellow blooms no more than 1/2" diameter and small leaves along stem rib edges that fall off in winter (deciduous). The stem tips often get ballon shaped near tops. Euphorbia ingens can eventually grow to approx. 35' feet (12m) tall.
The branches are segmented with spines running along the ridges of the segments. It produces small, greenish yellow flowers on the ridges of the topmost segment of every branch from autumn to winter. The fruit, a round 3-lobed capsule, turns red to purple when ripening. Makes an attractive drought tolerant landscape plant.
