Spine shields are pinkish-rose when new, turning to chocolate brown with age. it eventually will grow into a large multi-branched tree with small bright yellow blooms no more than 1\/2\" diameter and small leaves along stem rib edges that fall off in winter (deciduous). The stem tips often get ballon shaped near tops.
